A Very Special Couple | Transplant SpeakersArlene and Jack are the typical donor family type. By this I mean compassionate and giving. If there is someone that needs a helping hand you don’t have to look twice.

Since their tragedy Jack and Arlene have been staunch supporters of organ and tissue donation but have also dedicated their lives to their friends and family. They spend a good portion of their time with their daughter, Carrie; their son-in-law, Ted and their grand-children Amelia and Jake. Marie Patella, a long time teaching friend of Arlene’s, has been a very strong supporter and an important part of Arlene’s life. They all live in close proximity of each other and are interactively reliant on one another. They wouldn’t want it any other way.

There is Jack and Arlene reaching out to assist them. Jack is like the Energizer Bunny. He just never stops. Whenever I ask Jack to pack his bags to go somewhere or fill in for someone else I never worry and there’s never an excuse. ‘What time.’ is always his response. Sometimes Jack becomes a little too overactive and here is where his mild mannered English teacher of a wife enters and pulls in the reins. As a matter of fact, Arlene who also doubles as TSI’s treasurer pulls the reins in on all of us. Read more on 50th Wedding Anniversary Congratulations

www.iamwhatisee.com Blog: Sneak Peek--A Family Shoot on the CapeThis group of 13 folks traveled all the way from Canada and Arizona to get together for about a week, to celebrate their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary (congratulations.). Considering how rarely they are all in the same place, they wanted to get photos of this reunion. It was a really fun to watch dad and daughter bury mom in the sand, then turn around to see cousins building sand castles, then (and this was one of my favorite moments) watch one of the uncles bring a small crab out of the ocean and show everyone.

Most of the kids just looked. One was bold enough to touch its back. But the littlest girl just looked silently, then after a few moments, spat her tongue out of her mouth and said “blech..” It was so cute. Working with these folks was such a treat. They were one of the most helpful groups I’ve worked with. When I was photographing the kids, grandma was happy to stand behind me and get their attention, and several times throughout the day, people called me over to capture a different moment. I am not sure I would have gotten that moment with the crab without their help. The weather was great, the folks were kind and fun, and the water was the perfect temperature (I had to stand knee deep in it while wearing my pants and shoes and socks to get some of these shots). Thanks for letting me photograph such a great time on the beach. This is just a sneak peek. The rest of the photos will be posted in the next couple weeks.

Ywam 50th Anniversary

Getting Ready for the YWAM 50th Anniversary - Sandor KovatsThe main building for hosting the 50th is a brand new building that has been under construction for over a year now. We call it the defender hospitality center as it was funded by a very generous donation by a company called defender direct. It was finished about 8 weeks ago and since then one of my main jobs has been to assist with the fitting out of the building.

Well it’s been a very busy month as the whole base is preparing to host one of the worldwide celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of Ywam. The founders of Youth with a Mission, Loren and Darlene Cunningham along with other global Ywam leaders will descend upon our base in Tijuana to host the 4 day celebration from September 5th to 8th. We’re expecting over 200 people so it’s all hands on deck.

This fit out has included, lights, internet cabling, sound and stage, a comprehensive lighting and sound desk, Video conferencing facilities, telephone systems, security systems, projectors, monitors and screens and web cameras as well as specialized software to run the presentations.

YWAM 50th Anniversary Gathering | ywamhongkongIt’s all about the worship of Jesus and celebrating what He’s done here in Hong Kong. With our worship room, Jericho, packed full of Ywamers and Ywam associates, we enjoyed the full presence of God through music, heard wonderful and exciting stories of the past about faithfulness, joy, and the ‘I Won’t Quit’ spirit from Darlene. We also heard the testimonies of many long-time Ywam Hong Kong staff, including Jimmy Stewart, Dawn Gauslin, Hans Van Beek, Tim Obendorf, Merja Rikkonnen, Gail Maidment, and Malama Piliae.

Well, our opening night of the 50th anniversary celebration of Youth With A Mission here in Hong Kong went off without so much as a hitch. We were at Ecclesia Bible College, worshiping the living God and spending time hearing from our founders Loren & Darlene Cunningham. We were also honored enough to have Darlene’s mom, Mama Dar, with us as well, and she sold signed copies of her book The Worldwide Wanderings of a Ywam Widow. We are feeling very blessed and ready for the next couple of days celebrating God and Ywam. Keep visiting the site and hearing about it all.

We capped off the evening with more worship and a crazy-encouraging session with Loren about what Ywam is doing presently. We here at Ywam Hong Kong are happy to play even the smallest part in it. Mixed with the great company of fellow Ywamers both young and old and awesome food to boot, there’s no doubt that Jesus has really shown up to our Founders Fifty event here in Hong Kong.

YWAM 50th Anniversary « kk. Andrea. Eman. Elias. EleanaInitially when we were applying for Crossroads DTS, kk and I wondered if we would be able to participate in the celebrations, or if it was a separate event all together from our DTS. But we had no idea how intricately involved all of us would be in the preparations, execution, and celebrations. KK worked on several of the 50th celebration videos by editingaudio and creating original loops.

The 50th Celebration was a week -long time of worship, prayer, stroll downmemory lane, getting a taste of different cultures, and vision casting for the futurewith someamazing revelations of how God has been bringing key people and movementsinto Ywam‘s path. God’s people are coming together globally to finish the task, and we are about to embark on a time in history where missions has never exponentially thrust forward as insuch a time as this. Many of God’s people are unaware of such glory that is happening right around us.But God ismoving supernaturally and with great power, and we know the best is yet to come.

Andrea composed and played for the 2010 decade music piece for the Celebration’s finale 50th video clip. kk also got to sing on stage, and our children received special words from founder Loren Cunningham. They also received individual laying on of hands / prayer from Loren and Darlene as they blessed the children. Eman performedTae Kwon Do which Andrea and kk helped out with translations during practices and the performance. Our Crossroads DTS also greeted on one of the evenings. We prayed over a large map for the nations. The children also joined in praying over the nations ‘ what an awesome way for children to cultivate a heart for missions. The children also had a ‘WildFire’ program. I’ve never seen my children worship like this before. Holy Spirit was real in the way they worshipped, played, and how they received visions as well.

YWAM Arua: YWAM's 50th Anniversary: Eastern Africa 27 – 29 May ...Over the next 2 days, Loren and Darlene shared many encouraging testimonies of God’s faithfulness right from the days of their childhood to the present moment. They encouraged us to be God-loyal: that no matter what happens around us, we should not give in to self-pity but should keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and be loyal to Him, no matter what the cost. They challenged us to say ‘Yes.’ to Jesus with radical obedience’even when we don’t know the extent of that commitment.

On stage, our team from Ywam Arua base opened the celebrations by dancing and singing about the unity in diversity that characterizes Ywam. Coming from the nations of Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, Uganda, America, England and Australia, the Arua team built a bridge together to demonstrate their vision to be a bridge of healing to the nations. Then they crossed the bridge with flags of Sudan, Congo and Central African Republic, and called others to join them in reaching these nations for Jesus. A Masai brother crossed the bridge to the whoops and cheers of the audience. ——-> .

And never to give up, no matter how hard things get’we should not negotiate in our commitment to hear and obey the King of kings.

YWAM's 50th Anniversary « XTLA – YWAM San Jose, Costa RicaThe new Orlando base has over 198 acres of land with full housing and RV sites. They have their own lake and nature trails. It is an amazing site and gift of God’s.

But most of work is still to be done. They can use any and all help they can get. If you would like to get involved, just let me know, I can give your more information. Read more on Ywam 50th Anniversary

Disneyland Then, Now, and Forever: A intriguing look at Disneyland attractions as they were when they first opened, how they look now, and how a professional Disneyland futurist believes they will look in the future. For example, across a two-page spread The Mad Tea Party is shown first in its original 1955 location, then in its current location, and finally as an artist’s concept in which the teacups hover above the table and ram each other like tea-time bumper cars. If an attraction no longer exists, its “current” picture is of either the attraction that took its place or a tribute to the old attraction somewhere in the park, so the “now” entry for the Bathroom of Tomorrow shows the scene in Star Tours where the star speeder smashes through a wall and you can just see the bathroom of tomorrow in the corner of the screen.

The Art of Disneyland: More than just an update of the Sun-tzu original, The Art of Disneyland is a treatise on how to make people have fun — no matter whether they want to or not. The book begins by discussing how you must size up your guests. What do they want. What do they expect. What do they think you think they expect and want. From there it goes on to describe how to put together Disneyland-style theme-park entertainment in military terms, with each attraction a battle and each land a campaign combining a park-wide war. Too bad that this book wasn’t around a few years back, or the section on the difficulty of victory when your forces are divided might have made executives rethink the creation of Disney California Adventure. Ralf Schenk, Editor, Bilder einer gespaltenen Welt: 50 Jahre Dokumentar- und Animationsfilmfestival Leipzig (Images of a Divided World: 50 Years of the Leipzig Documentary and Animation Film Festival), Berlin: Bertz + Fischer Verlag, 2007, 268 pp, numerous photos. Introduction ‘ Bilder eines Festivals ‘ by current DOKfestival director Claas Danielsen. Essays by several critics and historians ‘ Otto Adler, Fred Gehler, Grit Lemke, Heidi Martini, Monica Mauer, Christiane Mckenberger, Wilhelm Roth, Tamara Trampe, Margit Voss, Barbara Wurm, and others ‘ who had accompanied the festival over the years.

Heidi Martini, Dokumentarfilm-Festival Leipzig: Filme und Politik im Blick und Gegenblick (Documentary Film Festival Leipzig: Films and Politics Viewed from Both Sides), Berlin: DEFA-Stiftung, 2007, 686 pp, footnotes, bibliography, appendices. This well documented history of the Leipzig DOKfestival underscores how important this festival was, and is, as an indispensable source for research scholars. Martini opens her study with a discussion on the nature of the documentary and its place in the cultural system and appreciation of the film medium in the German Democratic Republic. Some chapters offer insights into GDR political thinking ‘ like how the 1956 Hungarian uprising, which occurred during the week of the DOKfestival, prompted a three-year caesura in its history. Another chapter that takes the pulse of the times is the story of the 30th jubilee festival in 1987 ‘ shortly afterwards, Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika presaged the fall of the Berlin Wall in November of 1989. Exciting reading, particularly for those, like ourselves, who lived those memorable earthquake years.

This official edition serves as a running chronicle, beginning in 1955 as an East/West German event, then the up-and-down years between 1960 and 1989, and finally the changes in the festival mandate after the Wende in 1990. Some legendary names appear in the chronicle: Dziga Vertov, Joris Ivens, Karl Gass, John Grierson, Robert Flaherty, Ricky Leacock, Emile de Antonio, Alberto Cavalcanti, Chris Marker, Herz Frank, Santiago Alvarez, Roman Karmen, Jerzy Bossak, Mikhail Romm, Patricio Guzman, Volker Koepp, Jrgen Bttcher, Barbara and Winfried Junge, and many others. Discounts #1: Harold and the Purple Crayon 50th Anniversary ...I read this book when I borrowed it from the library in my elementary school. I am now 18, and still reminisce on my beloved journeys around the world in a hot air balloon with Harold. This is the book that I borrowed for the first time, and then got it later again and again.

Yes, I am a 45 year old man writing a review for a children’s book, and, no, I do not think that I ought to be ashamed of myself. A short while ago I stumbled upon a copy of this book by accident and I could’t believe the flood of warm and pleasant memories that it brought back. This was perhaps my favorite childhood book, along with the sequels. Maybe this was because from my earliest memories I always wanted to be an artist, and that is what Harold was, an artist with a magic purple crayon. He was more than an artist, he was a creator of worlds. That was important, he wasn’t presented as a trivial person doing ‘art’, he was the creative force behind whole new worlds. Or ‘co-creator’, for he often seemed as surprised as the reader at what flowed out of that crayon. While I didn’t become an artist, I did work for most of my life as a draftsman and designer. I’ve seen many, many things in the real world start life as a drawing on my board or computer screen. I think that I kept faith with Harold’.

It is one of the first Books that ever opened my mind up to the total loss of imagination to all possibilities. Every time I read it I would think of many more adventures Harold could have had with his mystical purple crayon. Even to this day, I can think of no better book to give a child’s imagination a glimpse of what possibilities there are. It is easy reading for the youngest of believers, but gives thought of what could be to even the oldest readers. I personally was not a child who favored reading, but this book was one of the few that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was one that I would read in the library while the class was still in it, and then would bring home for further enjoyment. I cannot recommend this book higher for any child whose imagination can run wild.

Odyssey To The S&S Cycle 50th Anniversary Celebration at Cyril ...From tomorrow Thursday June 26th To Sunday the 29th, S&S Cycle is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and you already know that the main event is 50 Builders competing with their S&S powered customs to get a chance to win a $50,000 prize. I had to decline my participation, but of course I have seen some of the new awesomebikes that my fellow builders are going to unveil during this show. Like this one built by Odyssey Motorcycles and called ‘Naga’, which is the name of a Chili Pepper found in India (you learn a lot in my Blog.).

I followed the link to the S&S voting page. Several bike pictures are still missing from the site. There are a few nice pieces but overall it’s a little bit disappointing. Lack of money. I noticed, like for the AMD show, that many major builders don’t participate to this show. Eddie Trotta, Billy Lane, Roland Sands, Cyril Huze, Matt Hotch, Dave Perewitz, Keino, and many other greats . Are the builders paid or not by S&S. Is it the explanation.

You are all invited to vote for each and every bike by going to the S&S 50th Build-Off Website(some builders still didn’t upload their bike picture. Not my fault.). Simply put, this will determine the percentage of pages that your links get published on.

“We are all kernels on the same corncob” « Up@dawnCajete: In many ways it helps us to visualize what native science has always been, in one way or another, trying to define, first of all that we are all interrelated, we all breathe the same air, we are made of the same elements of the earth, we are conveyors of the sun’s fire, we are participants in the activities of the biosphere no matter where we are and so this idea of the photographs of Earth, especially the newer technologies that allow us to see the Earth as it is evolving its processes, its weather patterns help us to visualize a living, breathing, active planet processes, the life process of the planet itself. And so those Images and ways of understanding ourselves, really do add to the conceptions and perspectives of native science. A metaphor that is sometimes used in native science is ‘we are all members of Turtle Island’.

The air that we breathe and that is finite we share with each other right now and eventually we will be breathing those same argon atoms again. The idea is that air is shared by all living, breathing entities and through that physical process we become related to each other. It is using those kinds of ways to describe the fact that physically, socially, even spiritually there is this interconnection and interrelatedness that human beings share with each other and that is referred to by saying we are all related. Mitakuye oyasin is the Lakota way of expressing that idea and that reality. There are words in other Indigenous languages that describe the same thing, that we are all related. We use a term in my language, because corn is kind of our sacramental plant, a staple of our traditional diet, we say we are all kernels on the same corn cob.

This is an idea that has been popularized by the Iroquois Confederacy but it is really a notion or an idea that is held by all native tribes. The metaphor describes Earth as a living, breathing, super organism and that we as human beings ride the turtle’s back. The thoughts that we think, the actions that we perform, the understandings and the insights that we gain, the celebrations as well as the sadness that we feel are all registered on the Great Mother of the turtles’ back. And so, we affect the consciousness of the Earth as she affects ours. This idea of the super organism which is the planet Earth has been held by every Indigenous culture that I can remember ever studying and can be said to be the prime philosophy of native peoples. It is the understanding that one comes to naturally; if you are a good observer you can begin to see how life forces interact on the Earth or just in the place in which you live, and you begin to have a sense that there is this greater organism, this greater process that is a part of life.

Cajete: I think by helping each other to understand the cultural principles that both our knowledge systems operate from. A lot of the misunderstanding on the part of native people is the feeling that Western science is totally antithetical to native philosophy and maybe at certain levels it is. And at many levels there are aspects of Western science that are utilized by native people to enhance their lives.

Cajete: In many ways it helps us to visualize what native science has always been, in one way or another, trying to define, first of all that we are all interrelated, we all breathe the same air, we are made of the same elements of the earth, we are conveyors of the sun’s fire, we are participants in the activities of the biosphere no matter where we are and so this idea of the photographs of Earth, especially the newer technologies that allow us to see the Earth as it is evolving its processes, its weather patterns help us to visualize a living, breathing, active planet processes, the life process of the planet itself. And so those Images and ways of understanding ourselves, really do add to the conceptions and perspectives of native science. A metaphor that is sometimes used in native science is ‘we are all members of Turtle Island’. Likewise, consider native people’s regard, understanding and consciousness related to reverence for the land’ how we are going to look at it in a generation from now. Is it going to affect our people and the people for seven generations or more. Understanding of an ecological reverence, philosophy and consciousness that guides the generation of knowledge in the context of science becomes very important and a much needed component. We are searching for, if you will, a revitalization of that reverence of the land and that reverence for all living things that we have always had because we wouldn’t be here as human beings if we didn’t have that. To bring it into a contemporary context to be able to then practice a more conscious form of science is what I am looking to. I know that Eastern traditions, Buddhism for instance, are also being explored for the same reasons, that there has to be a kind of consciousness that guides science rather than the consciousness that has guided it in the past. The big question is ‘how are we going to develop a kind of consciousness that allows us to work the future and work with the natural processes that are part of nature in a way that benefits both us as human beings but also benefits and cares for the finite resource which is the Earth.’ Native traditions in their variety of very diverse kinds of ways were able to do that at one time and I think those are the things that we have to rediscover. This is a rediscovery on the part of native people themselves. There is one book that I highly recommend called Beyond Culture and it’s written by a gentleman whose name is Edward G. Hall who was my doctoral thesis chair. He really explored how conflict happens as a result of language and cultural difference and I think we have to begin to learn again a new kind of language of talking to each other that goes beyond those traditional barriers and traditional kinds of issues that we have culturally. Those kinds of bodies of research are very important. For me as an educator, a native educator, there are two quintessential issues that we have to come to terms with. The first one is how we are going to deal with ecological crisis which is an issue of physical relationship, our physical relationship to the Earth. The other crisis is how we are going to deal with each other, which is the issue of social ecology.

Ford Falcon to celebrate 50th anniversary with six limited edition ...Read different studies as to why the locals are suffering in sales. It is because of reduced tariffs making imported cars cheaper, changing preferences and foreign ownership reducing flexibility to take advantage of changing preferences. Compare this to just 12-15years ago small cars where virtually the same price as large cars.

I had a BA XR6 ‘ it spent a lot of time in the workshop. Ford then managed to convince me they’d solved the issues in the BF, so I got a BF XR6T. It was a good car, but still had too many issues. I then decided I was going to switch to Holden. I took the SS for a test drive, but it felt cheap inside, and given the number of kilometers I drive, I spend a lot of time inside the vehicle. I went back to Ford and got an FG XR8. Much to my surprise, Ford have resolved just about all of the issues this time around. I have now done 110,000kms and it’s still going strong. There was a few things repaired under warranty, but they were done while the car was in for the scheduled services, so there was no additional impact to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is not another make of sedan on the road that could match this level of reliability. From my experience, it seems to me that Ford got the FG Falcon right.

And yes large cars are great value for money when compared to equivalent foreign products. In fact the real price has declined. For example a large car now accounts for approximately 36 weeks of the average persons income whereas the previous decade it was closer to a year of income. As a result small cars are now a larger proportion of private sales. The most popular model 4wd utes are mostly purchased by fleets. It has nothing to do with the reliability, it is changing preferences and tastes. Production and sales of large cars have remained constant for the last 8years but the market for new cars has increased past 1million sales up from below 800k annual sales 8 years ago lowering the market proportion of locally manufactured product. Local manufacturers just havn’t been able to take advantage of the growing market. Your argument saying it is the reliability of the product is wrong, it is short sighted and shows you are just using the knowledge you have gathered from a small group of people. Atherton State High School 50th Anniversary: MESSAGES RECEIVEDThanks very much to Anne and all the committee for organising the 50th anniversary. (Graeme, are you still playing cricket.) Although I’ve travelled widely, Atherton always retains a special place in my memory, not in the least because of two great and very formative years at the High School from 1962-3(Years 11 and 12). After that I went on to study physics at the Townsville University college, then to UQ in Brisbane, then to the Weather Bureau, and ..

well it’s a long story. I look forward to meeting you all in September to hear your own experiences. Robert Robson (Robbo).

Flight Engineers Dmitry Kondratyev and Oleg Skripochka spent time Monday preparing for their next spacewalk on Feb. 16. They readied the Pirs docking compartment airlock telemetry panel for the excursion.

The Exposed Pallet (EP) that housed spare parts brought to orbit on the Japanese Kounotori2 H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV2) was returned to the Japanese cargo ship Monday. Expedition 26 Flight Engineer Catherine Coleman and Commander Scott Kelly used the Kibo robotic arm to remove the EP from the Exposed Facility at the end of the Kibo laboratory and hand it off to Canadarm2. Coleman and Flight Engineer Paolo Nespoli then maneuvered Canadarm2 to install the EP back into its slot on the side of HTV2.

They will install a radiometric system on a workstation and a Molniya communications satellite telemetry system on the outside of the Zvezda service module. They also will remove a science experiment from Zvezda and debris panels from the Zarya module, as well as launch a nanosatellite carrying Gagarin 50th Anniversary Messages from around the world and a ham radio transmitter.

Two updates on Tibet: Dalai Lama's 50th Anniversary message and ...Amnesty International has condemned a decision by a court in Lhasa to hand down death sentences to two Tibetans, Losang Gyaltse and Loyar, accused of starting fatal fires in Lhasa during protests in March 2008. Two other people were given death sentences with a two year reprieve and one person has been sentenced to life imprisonment. It is unclear if they will appeal on their sentences but ultimately, China’s Supreme People’s Court will have to review today’s death sentences, as it does in all death penalty cases.

The fiftieth Anniversary of the Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet was observed last month. This major event continues to reverberate as a defining moment in the difficult relationship between China and its Tibetan region. The Tibetans in exile with the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government marked the occasion in greatly contrasting styles; the Buddhist leader issued a statement recalling Tibet’s suffering and struggle, his hopes for the future and his renewed wish for a negotiated settlement acceptable to both parties’.

Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International’s Asia Pacific Director, said: ‘Amnesty International condemns the death sentences handed down to Losang Gyaltse and Loyar. We have recorded a pattern of unfair trials leading to death sentences in China. Under these conditions it’s very unlikely that these sentences stand up. We urge the death sentences to be overturned.’ ‘.

The 2010 Aberdeen Highland Games by Francis Brebner The following day at the 2010 Aberdeen Highland Games, more than 10,000 spectators turned out for its 50th Anniversary Games. The same seven heavies (except for Stephen Aitken replacing Stuart Anderson) went all-out for the points in the third Games of the Glenfiddich League. The 16-lb.

hammer was won by B. Aitken with a 128′ 5′; in second place was brother S. Aitken with 126′; and in third, Robb with 125′ 7′. Dowson came in fourth place with 121′ 4′. In the following event with the 22-lb. hammer, B. Aitken notched up his second win with a throw of 105′ 3′. Robb held on to second place, just marginally pipping S. Aitken with a throw of 100′ 9′; in third place was S. Aitken with 100′ 6′. In the 16-lb. open stone, Robb stormed the win with a put of 52′ 2′ over Dowson, who placed second with 51′ 8′, and S. Aitken, who placed third with 50′ 8′. The 22-lb. heavy stone surprisingly was won by S. Aitken with a fantastic put of 42′ 6′, with Robb having to settle for second place with 41′ 4′. In third place was Dowson with a very noteworthy put of 40′ 9′. In the 28-lb. weight for distance, Sinclair dominated on this day as well with a throw of 80′ 5′ for the win. Robb was well in the rear with 76′ 7′ for second place, and Dowson not too far behind Robb with 74′ 6′ for third place. In the caber event, Robb kept his winning ways, delivering a 12:00 toss. B. Aitken made a great attempt with a toss of 12:02 for second place, with S. Aitken in third place with 12:04 and Sinclair in fourth place with 12:05. Lastly with the 56-lb. weight over the bar, Robb got the win this time over Sinclair at a height of 15′; in second place was Sinclair with 14′ 6′ and in third equal were brothers S. and B. Aitken at 13′. Next weekend is the Drumtochty Highland Games, the fourth Games in the Glenfiddich League for points, which will have an international presence with Poland’s Wenta brothers and Australia’s Aaron Neighbour as competitors. Craig Sinclair will miss the next few weekends of Games in order to give his injury a chance to heal, but he hopes to be in fighting form for the Balloch Games. Want to talk strength. Wasilla is a sprawling community that has been slapped down hodge-podge upon what was so recently wilderness of the most exquisite beauty. In its design, it is deliberately anti-zoned, anti-planned. In the building of Wasilla, the desire to make a buck has trumped aesthetics and all other considerations.

So perhaps, if one were to search hard enough, it might just be possible to find a sense of community here, and a town soul. So, using my skills as a photojournalist and a writer, I hope to do just that. If this place has a sense of community, I will find it. If there is a town soul to Wasilla, I will document it. I won’t compete with the newspapers. Hell no. But as time and income allow, it will be fun to wander into the places where the folks described above gather, and then put what I find on this blog.

This town, built in the midst of exquisite beauty, has largely become an unsightly, unattractive, mess of urban sprawl. Largely because of this, it often seems to me that Wasilla is a community with no sense of community, a town devoid of town soul. Read more on 50th Anniversary Games

Oh and it was raining cats and dogs and the outdoor matches was postponed to Wednesday. I stayed back on Wednesday to play for the Netball team. Was a pretty rough match and i gained plenty of ‘battle’ scars.

Oh yes, on Tuesday we had the 50th Anniversary Games Day and it was pretty fun. I was quite tired as i was the only girl in the badminton team and had to run to and fro playing quite a few games. I won Fang Lynn in the girls’ singles, but according to Janice, i ‘tyco’ one cause i kept playing drop-shot which in the beginning of the match i found to be FL’s weakness. But FL was good, and i must say i was pretty surprised. Oh yes, and then the second round of the girl’s singles i was up against Alexandria from 3H, oh gosh, she was darn good, and the thing is she put so much pressure on me i wanted to cry during the match but could only cry after the match, i mean i would look stupid, crying in the middle of an ongoing match. But i didn’t really mind losing to her though it was frustrating cause it was one point. Oh and Alex, f.y.i is the one of the few girls to defeat me in all my years as a badminton player.

For the first round i was GK and was trying my darndest to defend the goal. But with people like Lemuel, it’s a killer. Second round i was GS , i was pretty worn out by then but still tried my best, but the oppostition’s GK was Abygail and boy, she kept me in sight all the time. She kept apologising for being rough on me and i was like ‘It’s ok, don’t worry.’. So yes, after which it rained… again. me and Xiang walked to the front of the General Office and then Xiang pointed out that Ms Koh was going home and was like ‘Ask her to give us a lift lah,’ i looked at her thinking she had gone mad and at the same time thinking i wouldn’t dare anyway and said ‘YOU ask lah.’. So yes, we ventured out into the storm with our umbrellas which was no use as the rain still lashed against our faces and flooded our shoes. When we were halfway there we saw Ms Koh in her red Toyota, she waved at us and smiled, unfortunately for me my hands were full so i decided to wave my umbrella instead, which was quite funny.

Like many of the guys I interviewed, I’ve been consumed with a passion for Strats since I was ten-years-old and first saw The Shadows. I got my first one when I joined Frankie Miller’s Full House in 1975. It’s a beauty, a beaten up old 1959 Sunburst maple neck that had belonged to Steve Marriott.

Interviewing the players who took part in Curves was a real joy for me. There I was, sitting and talking with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Keith Richards, et al., about the passion of my life – it doesn’t get much better I guess. Eric talked openly and enthusiastically about Jimi and their friendship and about the first time he saw Jimi in full flight at an art college in London when Chas Chandler brought Hendrix along to a Cream gig. Jimi had said to Chas before they had left New York, that he would come to London with him on condition that he was introduced to Eric. So now, here was Jimi blowing with Jack and Ginger, and Eric standing with his mouth touching the floor. Clapton remembers: “There was something about the way Jimi played the Strat that made it seem like it was off limits to me.
